🛜 How to Use Public Wi-Fi Without Putting Your Accounts at Risk
May 12, 2026
The advice you have probably heard is "never use public Wi-Fi." The advice you have probably followed is to use it anyway. The honest answer is somewhere in the middle, and this episode is about finding exactly where that line is.
Public Wi-Fi does carry real risks, including fake hotspots designed to look legitimate and attackers who intercept unprotected traffic. But most of what you do on your phone is protected by HTTPS encryption, which has significantly changed the risk picture over the past several years. Knowing which activities to avoid and building a few simple habits is all it takes to use public Wi-Fi confidently.
What to Avoid and What Is Actually Fine
Be extra aware of public Wi-Fi for banking, purchases, and sensitive account logins. General browsing, reading, video, and social media are mostly fine, since that traffic is encrypted by design on reputable sites and apps.
Five Habits That Keep You Safe
- Verify the network name before connecting. Ask staff or look for a posted sign. Fake hotspots work because most people never check.
- Turn off auto-join for public networks in your Wi-Fi settings so your phone does not connect without your knowledge.
- Look into a VPN if you travel often or work from coffee shops regularly. Set it up at home before you need it.
- Log out of any accounts when you are done. Do not just close the app.
